High Chance of Recovery Thanks to Proton Therapy
The West German Proton Therapy Centre Essen (WPE) treats its 500th patient: Mr. M. shares his positive experience
Essen, Germany: August 8, 2016
Mr M. (67) has a Prostatic Carcinoma, the most common malignant tumour in men and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in men. He was diagnosed in 2009 when his doctor detected a high PSA level. After his doctor’s consultation, the ultrasound therapy began and was successful, the PSA level sank to 0!
At the end of 2015, his cancer, however, returned. After speaking to many experts and researching on the internet, Mr M. found out about proton therapy with its high success rate of 85-100% and no risk to sensitive tissue near the tumour such as bladder, nerves or rectum which results in minimal side effects e.g. incontinence or impotence. His mind was quickly made up and he scheduled an appointment to visit the WPE. After acceptance, Mr M. started proton therapy.
He underwent 37 one-hour outpatient proton therapy sessions over the course of 8 weeks. After each session, Mr M. claimed to have been a little tired, but didn’t have any other side effects and was still able to work and live life to his fullest potential.
“I am confident to have now defeated cancer and highly recommend any man who is struggling with prostate cancer to speak with his physician about whether proton therapy is a suitable treatment option. Unfortunately, many doctors don’t seem to know much about proton therapy”, states Mr M.
Professor Beate Timmermann, Medical Director of the WPE, confirms this and adds: “In many cases, proton therapy is a good alternative to other treatments.
