Proton therapy is usually part of an interdisciplinary treatment plan that takes the following into account: Alternative therapies from different disciplines such as oncological radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, haematology oncology, surgery, endocrinology, ophthalmology and many others.
Therefore, the WPE works closely with the West German Cancer Centre at the University Hospital Essen, the largest oncology center in Germany. On the so-called tumour board at conferences, doctors discuss common treatments and outcomes of patients or how they can combine the proton therapy with other methods. Therefore, the combined decades of experience benefits your therapy.
However, your treating physician remains responsible. The results of the tumour board discussion, however, serve to either support the therapeutic decision of the attending physician or to make another recommendation.
