Referral for proton therapy at WPE

Proton therapy is an extremely modern, gentle radiation procedure for treating tumours. This is because the radiation is delivered with millimetre precision – for the best possible protection of healthy surrounding tissue. However, proton therapy is not indicated for every diagnosis. If you have a patient you would like to present for a proton radiotherapy indication check, you will find all the information you need here.

How do I get in touch?

To check whether your patient is eligible for proton therapy, please start by contacting our Case Management team. They will help you prepare the necessary documents and will forward your enquiry to our medical team if required.

Our case management supports you with all questions regarding the allocation of your patient.

For an initial assessment of your patient, a doctor’s letter including the diagnosis, course of the illness to date and treatment received is usually sufficient. If all parties involved are in favour of treatment at WPE, we will need further documents and information to confirm the indication.

Required patient documents:

  • Current doctor’s letter (overall situation/summary in German or English)
  • Operation reports
  • Laboratory findings
  • Histological/pathological findings
  • Radiological diagnostics (MRI/CT images on CD/DVD in DICOM format incl. corresponding written findings)

All documents must be in German or English!

We use the University Medical Centre of Essen cloud for the document transfer process. Our Case Management team will send you a link for this, if required.

Documents can also be sent by fax:

What happens following a positive indication?

If your patient is given an indication for proton therapy at WPE, our Case Management team will schedule an initial consultation appointment. The radiotherapy appointments then follow.

Initial consultation appointment

The initial consultation is held over two days. On Day 1, your patient will have the opportunity to become acquainted with WPE and the team involved. There will also be an information session lasting around an hour.

Day 2 is what is known as the planning appointment at which we will prepare the positioning aids and conduct CT and MRI scans for planning purposes.

Commencement of proton therapy

The actual proton therapy begins approximately two weeks after the initial consultation and after the individual treatment plan has been drawn up. It is performed on an outpatient basis, usually once a day, five days a week.
