Currently, about one third of the German population will fall ill to cancer within the course of life, which amounts to about 450,000 new cases per year. Around half of the malignant disease is treated surgically and 40% (50% in the US) are treated with radiation therapy. Proton therapy is considered to be a particularly promising alternative to tumour treatment.
More than 150,000 patients worldwide have been treated with protons. The focus of this form of radiation therapy that the WPE offers is not only on the successful treatment of maintaining and increasing the quality of life but also on minimizing the long-term side effects of treatment. All of these factors need to be considered in regards to our patients.
